Chickens are one of the easiest ways to practice a tenet of permaculture:  Systems should be, as far as possible, self-contained and self-supporting.  Chickens eat the grass, weeds, and insects.  Their manure fertilizes the soil and thus nourishes the grass, weeds, and insects.  Their eggs (our are still too young) feed us and produce new chickens.  They eat the leavings from our garden and provide material for to fertilize our garden.  They eat the pests that feed on our garden and us.  A bonus:  They provide us with hours and hours of entertainment.
