What's Next?

We're trying to decide what to do and where to go next.  Our original plan was to return home to Maine at the end of March or the beginning of April.  Now that we're out, though, there are many places I want to see, places that we couldn't visit during the colder weather.  It's a major trip to drive all the way back to Maine and unless we have a compelling reason to do so, and there are other things we'd rather do, it makes sense to postpone our return.

Right now, it's hard to be motivated to go back.  I spend my days in tank tops, shorts, and sandals.  We can sleep with the windows open.  We can go take the dog for walks without bundling up.  In the afternoons, I can get some exercise in the park's pool and then dry off by lying in the sun poolside.  There's a decent pizza place and a very good Mexican restaurant less than ten miles from here, as well as several grocery stores.  The hospital where I can get medical care is about twenty minutes away.  When our time is up here, we can move somewhere else that also has great weather, good restaurants and grocery stores, and new places to go for walks.

Meanwhile, back in Maine, the expected low temperature tonight is three degrees below zero.  Here's a shot from the downtown webcam:
That's snow.  Last year there was some snow on the ground until the end of April.  The last frost of the winter often happens in the last week of May or the first week of June.

The really good restaurant in our hometown closed down for good at the end of the summer.  The decent grocery store is forty-five minutes away, as are my rheumatologist, neurologist and the hospital where I get infusions.

Meanwhile, here in Desert Hot Springs, the oleanders, creosote bush, cacti, and wildflowers here in are blooming.  Many of our snowbird neighbors have left Sam's Family Spa and begun their slow trek back to Canada.  I'm not sure that I'm ready to make a similar move, in our case, toward the far northeast.

Our month will be up here at Sam's in a little more than a week.  We need to decide where to go next and what, if anything, to do with our house in Maine.
