Turkeys Showing Off

On Facebook, friends post pictures of daffodils and discuss their upcoming last frost dates.  Here, it snows.  And snows again.  But the long range forecast does show an upcoming cluster of days and nights where low temperatures won't go much below freezing.  Spring is coming, albeit slowly and later than in most areas of the country.

The turkeys have been back in the fields around our house.  There are at least two dozen of them. I enjoy watching them march from one end of the field to the other--where our neighbor puts out food for them and other birds.   This morning I looked out to see several males with their tails at full display and their wings fluffed out.  They're pretty impressive when they puff themselves up like that.  Otherwise, they look like small, hunched dinosaurs.  Which isn't to say that they shouldn't be taken seriously.  I've read several reports over the last year of aggressive turkeys attacking cars and people.

In a 2012 article, a Kittery newspaper reported that residents were fearful of leaving their homes or cars, due to aggressive toms (http://www.seacoastonline.com/article/20120427/news/204270424).  We haven't had any troubles with that.  They're very perceptive and run from any hint of possible danger.  Any time they catch sight of us, they run--even when they're several hundred feet away and we're only looking at them through the windows.

Sorry, no pictures today.  The turkeys have been too skittish.
