Evening Walk

These things, during my evening walk with the dog:

In one ear, the sounds of a solitary cricket in the tall grass.  In the other ear, the murmurations of the ocean waves, like soft, continuous static.  To the west, the most spectacular sunset: a vivid rainbow that begins at the horizon:  deep and dirty purple, then red, then orange--fading to yellow and turning gradually into cobalt, then azure, then the indigo blue of full night.

Within the bowl of sky over the ocean, flecks of light, stars.  The waves reflect the light from the streetlamps that are scattered across the parking lot.  Intersecting and overlapping fuzzy lines of whiteness, too many, too ill-defined to count, roll onto the beach and dissipate.  A few birds run along the edge that separates the waves from the sand.  Odd creatures; only their legs move when they run; their bodies move along in a straight line with no up and down motion at all.
